The Math competition for Bronx Middle School students was held at Manhattan College on Tuesday, February 6, 2018. Three Bronx schools qualified to advance to the New York State round of the prestigious mathematics competition. Students from Success Academy Bronx #2, Riverdale Country School, and Horace Mann will be competing against other top NYS schools on March 17, 2018 at Rennselaer Polytechnic Institiute for the right to advance to National Mathcounts Finals.
The competition included several rounds of written tests measuring ability in all areas of math. The top finishers of the written rounds then competed in head to head Jeopardy-style competition to determine individual rankings.

Our apologies to the Horace Mann Team, we do not have a photo of them.

The competition program is one part of the Mathcounts effort to promote interest in and to reward excellence in math. Many studies have pointed to the fact that American students have fallen badly behind our foreign competition in math and sciences. This is a trend that must be corrected if Americans as individuals and as a nation, are to be able to compete effectively in the global market.
The Bronx competition is sponsored for the fourteenth straight year by the Bronx Chapter of NYSSPE under Chapter President Jack Kleinfeld, PE. The event is organized and financially supported by Gee Eng, PE, through his association with the Bronx Chapter. Manhattan College School of Engineering Dean Tim Ward generously provides a wonderful space to conduct the competition. And the event is only possible with the help of many other volunteers too numerous to name – but special thanks to Mary Bogovic and Leigh Attwood who have both been helping over ten years and Professor Robert Suzzi Valli of the Manhattan College Math Dept.
For additional information on participating in or volunteering for Mathcounts, please contact Mr. Kleinfeld or Mr. Eng at Mathcounts@BxNSPE.org.
If you have (or are) a 6th or 7th grade student with an interest in math, you should see the post about the BEAM summer program.
